Youcan do so by going to Steam (upper left of the client) > Settings > Controllers > General Controller Settings. There you can toggle Xbox (or PlayStation) Configuration Support on / off. Please give both settings a try and retry the game and let us know if there's any change.

Thats not really a workaround. If Assassin's Creed III recognize the controller, everything works like expected. The left joystick is for walking and also for navigation the menu. (the controller setting still works!) but the XBOX Controller is not shown amongst the input devices! I can't select it. I installed the game via the installers
